Devlog #01: First Steps
We're just getting started...
So, my first devlog! For a long time I wanted to make games but never got the right motivation to do it. During COVID-19 outbreak, I found myself at home with my computer and finally decided to learn somethings about programming and game development. Then I had the brilliant idea of making a game. At least I was going to try. The main game's theme came after I finished some basic Unity tutorials.
The main challenge of making this game is lack of knowledge. I've never programmed a game or made art for a game so I needed to learn everything from the scratch. My first week was basicaly a learning period, with a LOT of tutorials and C# online courses. Finally, after mastering the basics of pixel art and C#, I downloaded Unity and started messing around with some stuff, following a couple of tutorials.
So, what's the main ideia of the game? It's a 2D space shooter with time control mechanics and a lot of ships to play and a lot of planets to save. I had the idea to implement dark matter (I know it's not scientificaly accurate) to control the time and this is how the game title "Space and Time Matter" came out.
The first week of development was the hardest, I had to learn Unity and, at the same time, integrate a lot of scripts in one single level. After two days, my first endless level was ready - with no background, really basic art and sound effects and a really annoying song. It was functional, at least! Then I started optimizing art, coding and music. After a week I implemented a functional main menu with a basic character customization page and a nice level selector.
Now I'm reworking the art for the first level, the planet "Teran" and when everything is nice and pretty I'll start to work on the second level, "Muna". I'm working hard to finish the game as soon as I can, with quality and a lot of content so you can play it and enjoy :)
Make sure to follow us on Twitter for daily updates of the development!
Things I've done so far:
- The basics of the game;
- A basic store system;
- The first level with three phases and a Big Boss at the end;
- DIFFERENT SHIPS AND SKINS (Y E S !);
- Annoying music;
- Reworked the annoying music and made it EPIC;
- Implemented Pickups (shields and bullet upgrades);
- Implemented slow motion effect controlled by dark matter.
Things I wanna do:
- Add a LOT of ships
- And a LOT of planets
- Make a fun game :)
